Dr. Madlen Kobi is a social anthropologist interested in research and teaching on urban anthropology, architectural anthropology, reuse of (construction) waste and urban space use with a regional focus on China and its northwestern borderlands. She obtained her PhD entitled "Constructing, Creating and Contesting Cityscapes. A Socio-Anthropological Approach to Urban Transformation in Southern Xinjiang, P.R. China" in 2014 from the Institute of Social Anthropology of the University of Bern. She worked as a guest researcher at Xinjiang University in Ürümqi (China) and at the Max-Planck-Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle (Germany). After an engagement as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Ethnographic Museum / Institute of Social Anthropology and Empirical Cultural Studies of the University of Zürich, she is now a post-doctoral researcher at the Academy of Architecture of the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
