Lionel Epiney is an architect and PhD student at the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Mendrisio. He is a qualified architect with a Master of Sciences ETH in Architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich, and currently involved in Prof. Sascha Roesler’ research project “Passive Climate Control and the City”. His studies and practices have included work in Switzerland and Chile. As a PhD student interested in the contemporary city of the Global South, more precisely in agencies of passive climate control and new modes of thermal governance, Lionel combines interests in urban transformations, energy transitions, thermal standards and globalisation. His interest in analysing the dynamics between city climate, socio-economic conditions and regulation in the housing production of Santiago de Chile emerged partially out of his experience working by Alejandro Aravena (elemental).
