Contours of an Urban Architectural Anthropology: City Climate, Built Environment and Socio-Material Practices in Chongqing (Southwest China)
AUTHOR: Madlen Kobi
CONTEXT: Lecture in the Institute Colloquium, Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Bern, September 17, 2019
This talk sketches an urban architectural anthropology which links the material structure of the house with the socio-cultural practices of housing. Based on ethnographic fieldwork data collected in Chongqing in 2017, it outlines an urban architectural anthropology around three key features: 1.) consideration of the materiality of architecture; 2.) ethnography as main data gathering method; and 3.) architecture as process, not as static object.
